Currently: August

We’re finally having a bit of cooler weather, which reminds me fall is coming, whether I’m ready for it or not. (I kind of am.) The change of seasons is always a good time for a meme.

Well, all the time is a good time for a meme, but here we are.

Current Book(s): Um, several. “Boneshaker” by Cherie Priest, “Mission to Paris” by Alan Furst, various Wonder Woman books, and “Jesus Feminist” by Sarah Bessey.

Current Playlist: My videogame soundtrack playlist for writing, my Lord Huron playlist for driving.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Working my way through the giant bag of chocolate covered sea salt caramels I got at the beach.

Current Color: black – black sweats or black T-shirts.

Current Drink: white wine.

Current Food: sea salt caramels! Also salads with chicken on them.

Current Favorite Show: We’re still working our way through TNG, but I keep finding myself peeking over Kevin’s shoulder whenever he’s watching “White Collar.”

Current Wishlist: New jeans 😦 This Captain Marvel T-shirt. More Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman graphic novels. Captain Marvel’s uniform jacket, which doesn’t exist in real life unless you make your own. A lightsaber for my Luke Skywalker costume. Better wrists.

Current Needs: To finish revising a damn short story already.

Current Triumphs: I conducted two interviews for church promotional project!

Current Bane(s) of my Existence: Tendonitiiiiiis. Sexism in comics. Procrastination.

Current Celebrity Crush: Matt Bomer. Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Current Indulgence: Sea salt caramels. White wine. Not writing.

Current #1 Blessing: Writing!

Current Slang or Saying: can’t really think of anything…

Current Outfit: T-shirt tucked into my gray maxi skirt.

Current Excitement: I’m hosting a baby shower this weekend for which I get to make tiny peach pies!

Current Mood: hungry… I tend to forget to have breakfast until, well, lunchtime.

Book Q&A

I am borrowing a meme from Fourth Street Review!

Book Q&A Rules

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of your favourite book cover
3. Answer the questions below
4. Tag a few people to answer them too
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you’ve tagged them
6. Make sure you tell the person who tagged you that you’ve taken part!

What are you reading right now?

Eight Girls Taking Pictures” by Whitney Otto.  Lirael” by Garth Nix. Occasionally, “The World Treasury of Science Fiction.”

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?

Ha! Yeah, I think I know:

What five books have you always wanted to read but haven’t got round to?

  1. “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy
  2. “Wide Sargasso Sea” by Jean Rhys
  3. “The Eyre Affair” by Jasper Fforde
  4. “1984” by George Orwell
  5. “One Thousand and One Nights”

What magazines do you have in your bathroom/ lounge right now?

None in the bathroom, but the coffee table has a few old Vogue from before my free subscription ran out. 😦

What’s the worst book you’ve ever read?

I really really loathed “Heart of Darkness,” but I think it’s one of those books that actually is good, and I just hated it because it was assigned reading.  (Summer reading, no less!)  The book that I think actually is terrible and didn’t deserve to be published was “Intimacy” by Hanif Kureishi, which is the semiautobiographical account of how the author is a whiny cheating self-centered horrible person and crappy father.

What book seemed really popular but you didn’t like?

The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.  Reviews promised a tear-jerking, life-changing story, but I couldn’t get past the experimental style.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?

The “Delirium” trilogy by Lauren Oliver for YA fans.  “Illustrated Man” and “Martian Chronicles” to people who have never read Ray Bradbury.

Currently: November

Oh look, I’m out of pre-scheduled content. Time for a meme!

Current Book(s): The Shadow of the Wind,” “Lirael,” and a beefy beautiful anthology of science fiction from around the world going back to the 30s, “The World Treasury of Science Fiction.”

Current Playlist: Rend Collective, Blackmill, dubstep, and the Mass Effect soundtracks, plus a sampling of folk/indie bands: Bronze Radio Return, Neulore, Lord Huron, Mother Mother…and stuff on Itunes Radio.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Having Kevin be my proxy for Mass Effect 2:
“We’re going to be BroShep this time right?”
“If by ‘be BroShep’ you mean ‘romance Garrus,’ then yes.”

Current Color: Spring green, especially in scarf form.

Current Drink: All the tea.

Current Food: Probably too much pasta.

Current Favorite Show: “West Wing.”  Recently there was a brief scene featuring both CJ and Nancy McNally and I spent the whole scene containing a high-pitched squee of admiration because those are the best two female characters on the show and definitely two of the best female characters on TV period and to have them have a conversation about US foreign policy was just…eeeesogood.

Current Wishlist: wrists that don’t hurt!

Current Needs: wrists that don’t hurt!

Currently (June)

Current Book(s): Still chugging through “North & South” by Elizabeth Gaskell; started re-reading “The Sun Also Rises” and finally cracked open “The Time In Between.”

Current Playlist: Been listening to more Mumford & Sons lately, along with Gungor, Jon Foreman, Janelle Monae, and All Sons & Daughters.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: I’m playing a ridiculous amount of Mass Effect 3.  And a few weeks ago, we bought a Costo box of those “entertainment” cookies for a party that ended up not happening, so…we’re feasting on fancy cookies for no particular reason.

Current Color: Brown, I guess?  I have a comfy pair of brown linen capris that I’ve been wearing as lounge pants now that it’s warm (yaaaay), and I’ve been accenting a lot of my outfits with wood earrings and brown pearls, my little bronze-finish Big Ben pendant, and faux-topaz stuff.

Current Drink: Angry Orchard cider and all my new tea from David’s Tea.  Cranberry-pear blackPeach/pineapple with bamboo! (BAMBOO! What kind of craziness is that?)

Current Food: Our garden has grown enough to let us add some homegrown stuff to our meals!  We finally got to add fresh basil to the caprese pasta we make all the time, and while we don’t have enough lettuce for full salads, we can at least supplement with it.  (Fingers crossed that the aphids stay out this year.)

Currently (May)

Current Book(s): “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” by John Berendt and “North & South” by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Current Playlist: Alternating between Gungor/All Sons & Daughters, epic movie soundtracks, Janelle Monae/Adele/Amy Winehouse, and a playlist I’m called “Angry Blues” based on Gary Clark Jr.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: We’ve started having breakfast with a big group of our friends, and the main dish is French toast with what the cook calls “maple fluff:” maple syrup beaten with powdered sugar and (I think) milk.  And it’s usually dyed pink, to go with the blue and green French toast.

I am not actually ashamed of this, although I probably should be.

Current Color: Black, somehow!  We’re finally getting some summer weather, but about 75% of my t-shirts are either plain black or plain white. Boring!

Current Drink: My boss got a box of Tea Forte teas and offered me one.  I sipped it reverently – it was the Estate Darjeeling and it tasted like savory herbs, fruit, and magic – and expected to never taste something so lovely again.

Then my boss left the box in the common room, and now I get to drink more Tea Forte.

Current Food: Summer goodies like pulled pork, BBQ anything, pasta salad, and ice cream sandwiches.  Also, now that I know how easy it is to make it myself, jambalaya.  No more Zatarain’s in this house – one chicken breast, a handful of shrimp, and one package of kielbasa plus veggies, rice, and a couple teaspoons of King of the Cajuns spices.  Awesome.

Me, A-Z

Time to roll around in the gratifying puddle of oversharing that is a meme!

Available or married: Married to an amazing, loving, handsome, patient, hardworking dude.

Book: Love “East of Eden” and stuff by Alan Furst, Isabel Allende, Jhumpa Lahiri, Tolkien, and Ray Bradbury. My guilty pleasures are Mercedes Lackey and YA trilogies with questionable romances. Currently reading “IQ84,” “Mistborn” and “North and South” which I got as a free e-book and how have I lived this long without free e-books.

Chore you hate: Cleaning the litter box.

Drink of choice: Tea!

Essential start to your day: Complaining. Caffeine.

Favorite color: Navy blue, I suppose.  I’ve always been more interested in color combinations than individual colors.

Game to play or watch: I like “Fallout”-type adventure games and the Halo series.  I also like word-centric party games like Apples to Apples.

Hometown: Bellevue, WA

Instruments you play: I’m capable of playing piano and maybe three chords on a guitar!

11 Things

Thanks again to Tia at Reading In Skirts for the opportunity to meme it up!

here are the rules:
1. Post these rules
2. Post 11 random things about yourself
3. Answer the questions set for you by the tagger
4. Create 11 new questions for the people you have tagged to answer
5. Tag 11 ‘peeps’

11 Random Things About Me:

1. I hate the smell of scallops.

2. I’m grateful to my mom for a lot of things, but one of the weirdly big ones is how she didn’t let us have soda growing up.  To this day I hate carbonated drinks, which is kind of lame, but I think never drinking soda is going to have some good long-term effects on my health.

3. Movies I’ve seen at midnight include “Revenge of the Sith,” “Goblet of Fire,” and “Watchmen.”  “Watchmen” is the reason I don’t go to midnight showings anymore.  (Well, that, and I’m old.)

4. My first CD was Enrique Inglesias’ “Bailamos.”

5. I grew up in a huge church with a big music program, and they once put on an opera called “Noye’s Fludde.”  I was The Wind and I ran around in black leggings, waving a streamer.

6. I got to go to Austria/Germany/Switzerland with said church music program, and one of my favorite memories is singing one of our a cappella pieces in the big echoing cellars of a castle.

7. I was going to go to a Backstreet Boys concert in 8th grade, but it was canceled because AJ went to rehab.

8. I once saw Malcom McDowell in Seattle.

9. My first movie crush was Luke Skywalker, or possibly Aladdin.

10. I’m on Pinterest.  Are you?  Let’s hang out!

11. I finally achieved one of my life goals by filling an entire bookshelf in our apartment with National Geographics.
